Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt? Causes and Fixes

Header graphic reading Vape tastes burnt? Causes and fixes, with a simple diagram of a dry wick and a saturated wick

A vape usually tastes burnt because the coil’s cotton wick is not fully soaked with e-liquid, or because the coil is getting more power than it can handle. Check the liquid level, prime new coils properly, give the wick time between puffs and lower the power. On a disposable, a burnt taste usually means the device is nearly empty and cannot be fixed.

Vaping products are for adults 19 and older in Ontario. This guide covers taste and performance only.

What a burnt taste actually means

In a refillable device or pod kit, a coil heats a cotton wick. The wick pulls e-liquid in as fast as the coil uses it. When the wick runs short, the coil heats dry cotton, and you taste it right away: a dry, scorched, bitter flavour.

That is why most fixes come down to two things: keep the wick wet, and keep the heat reasonable. The five steps below cover both.

Troubleshooting steps, in order

1. Check the e-liquid level

Look at the fill window. If the level has dropped below the coil’s wicking holes, the wick cannot refill itself. Top up before the next puff, and do not wait until the tank is nearly empty.

2. Prime every new coil

A new coil is dry cotton. If you skip priming, the first puffs will taste burnt, and that first scorch can leave a harsh taste behind. Prime it like this:

  1. Put a few drops of e-liquid straight onto the cotton through the coil’s side holes.
  2. Fill the tank or pod to the max line.
  3. Let it rest for several minutes so the wick can saturate. Thicker liquids need longer.
  4. Start at the low end of the coil’s power range, then build up.

3. Give the wick time between puffs

Chain vaping pulls liquid out faster than the wick can replace it. Space your puffs and keep them short. If the taste turns harsh partway through a session, put the device down for a minute so the wick can catch up.

4. Lower the wattage

Every coil has a rated power range, printed on the coil or in the maker’s guide. Running above that range heats the cotton faster than it can be fed. Start at the low end and raise the power in small steps, only as far as the flavour stays smooth. Many pod devices have fixed output and no power setting, so move on to step 5.

5. Replace the coil

Coils wear out. Sweetened e-liquids leave residue on the coil faster, which dulls the flavour and can cause a burnt taste even when the wick is full. If a properly primed coil still tastes harsh or flat after a fresh fill, replace it. Coil life depends on your power setting, how often you vape and the e-liquid you use, so go by taste rather than a calendar.

Two less obvious causes

Liquid that is too thick for the coil

E-liquids with a high VG share are thicker. A coil with small wicking ports, common in many pod systems, cannot draw a thick liquid fast enough, so the wick runs dry between puffs and the taste turns burnt. Check the coil maker’s guidance, since many coils list the VG and PG range they suit. If your liquid is too thick, switch to a thinner blend or a coil built for it. Our e-liquid and vape juice page explains the options, and our team can talk through VG and PG ratios in store.

Leaking or flooding is a different problem

If liquid is pooling at the base, gurgling, or spitting into your mouth, the coil is flooded, not burnt. Common causes are overfilling, a loose seal, a cracked tank or a coil that is not seated properly. Wipe the device dry, check the seals and coil fit, and fill only to the max line. Flooding is usually a fit or fill issue. A scorched coil needs replacing.

Quick reference: symptom, cause and fix

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Burnt on the first puffs of a new coil Coil not primed Drop liquid on the cotton, fill, wait several minutes
Burnt taste as the tank runs low Liquid level below the wicking holes Refill to the max line
Harsh taste during a long session Chain vaping, wick not resaturating Space your puffs, rest for a minute
Burnt taste when power goes up Wattage above the coil’s rated range Lower to the low end of the range
Flat or burnt taste with fresh liquid Coil at end of life Replace the coil
Dry, weak vapour with thick liquid High-VG liquid in a small-port coil Use a thinner liquid or a coil built for it
Gurgling, wet device, liquid in the mouthpiece Flooding, not burning Check seals and coil fit, fill to the max line
Disposable tastes burnt Device is nearly empty It cannot be fixed, replace it

If it is a disposable

A disposable has no replaceable coil, no fill port and no power setting. When one tastes burnt, the wick has usually run dry because the device is close to empty. Waiting a minute may help briefly, but there is no repair. If you want something you can service, a refillable system lets you swap coils. Our guide to choosing a refillable pod kit covers the basics, and our vape pods page shows what we carry. If you are comparing formats, browse our disposable vapes in Scarborough.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a brand new coil taste burnt?

A new coil is dry cotton. Without priming, the coil heats the cotton before the wick has soaked up e-liquid. Put drops directly on the cotton, fill the tank, and wait several minutes before the first puff.

Can a burnt coil recover?

Not reliably. Once the cotton is scorched, the taste usually stays, so the fix is a new coil. Priming it properly and keeping the power in range helps the next one last.

What wattage should I use?

Use the range printed on the coil or in the maker’s guide. Start at the low end and raise it in small steps. If the taste turns harsh, go back down.

Why does my disposable taste burnt?

It is almost always nearly empty. A disposable cannot be refilled or repaired, so a burnt taste means it has reached the end of its life.
